MICHALIS PICHLER – a monograph published by Printed Matter, Inc. and Spector Books

June 5, 2015

6:00-8:00 PM

Printed Matter is pleased to present MICHALIS PICHLER, the first artists’ book/monograph focused on the practice of Berlin-based artist and author Michalis Pichler, co-published by Printed Matter and Spector Books. The book is edited by Annette Gilbert and Clemens Krümmel.

Please join us for an opening reception and book release party with Pichler on Friday, June 5, 6-8 pm, featuring readings from publication editor and contributor Annette Gilbert, poet Rob Fitterman, and artist Chris Habib, co-hosted with Ugly Duckling Presse, who will release Pichler´s The Ego and Its Own. Gilbert will also release her new title REPRINT: Appropriation (&) Literature, a compendium of appropriative works, published by Lux Books.

The publication explores a body of artists’ publications and other works by Pichler that makes strategic use of found and pre-used material, including sources derived from image, object, sound, text or thought. Its longish subtitle is derived from a Lucy-Lippard-publication:

Thirteen Years: The materialization of ideas from 2002 to 2015: a cross-reference book of information on some esthetic boundaries: consisting of a bibliography into which are inserted text, critical essays, art works, documents, arranged chronologically and focused on so-called “greatest hits” and conceptual poetics with mentions of such vaguely designated areas as appropriation, post-naive, unboring boring, détournement, objet perdu, erasure poetry, or writing through, occurring now in the work of Michalis Pichler (with occasional political overtones), edited by Annette Gilbert and Clemens Krümmel.

555 SCHNAPSPRESSE SONNETS, FOLDED, STAPLED AND SOLD IN CHUNKS OF 5

555 SCHNAPSPRESSE SONNETS, FOLDED, STAPLED AND SOLD IN CHUNKS OF 5 is a variation of a SONNET written by Rossetti in 1871, re-written by Carrión in 1972 and subsequently re-written by Pichler since 2009.
It is exploring the materiality of language, how books travel into the world, and how a fragmented printrun can still constitute an organic piece.

It is awkward to read, and the awkwardness certainly is half of its charme. Due to their rotated binding and blurring through the pages, they also look like Rorschach-drawings.
